The phrase ‘Te Araroa’ translates to ‘The Long Pathway’ and is the outcome of a vision Geoff Chapple had in the mid-1990’s. He is now the CEO of the Te Araroa Trust chaired by Roger Wilson with Sir Wilson Whineray as Patron.
The Trust aims to have the trail completed by late-2010. With 95% already completed and marked, the remaining can be navigated via forestry and main road bypasses. Their support to The Big Walk has been nothing short of brilliant. With the majority of The Big Walk utilising the Te Araroa trail this year, maps and area knowledge of what can be expected (given the logistics and planning required) is critical.
Thanks to Geoff and his team, it has been a walk in the park!
As we travel through the country, we will be posting video clips and maps of the geography we pass. If you like what you see – get out there and do it yourself!
